What's Up Wednesday

Hello, Wednesday! Are you going to join in Erin and Jaime's fantastic What's Up Wednesday this week? :D

What I'm Reading

Finished Asylum.  It wasn't really what I expected it to be.  It was split into four stories featuring the same characters, but it didn't quite work for me.  Then I read the 6th Jack Reacher novel.  Good book.  Sometimes you need to be able to pick up a story and know you're going to get a solid read.  Now I'm back in the world of YA with a book called Thirteen.  So far, so intriguing, although I would say it's at the younger end of YA.

What I'm Writing

Violin!Story is done at just over 57k.  It's short, but it was always just for me.  Maybe in the future I'll engage in the humongous edit it would require, but for now, it just feels good to have the idea out.

Feel a bit lost right now, although there's always a few ideas brewing in my brain ;)

What Else I'm Up To

Work. That's pretty much gonna be my answer until the end of August :P

I did spent the weekend looking after my friends' cats... I did, however, fail to properly care for two of their fish ^^; Epic fail!

I also played a lot of Tomb Raider. My love for Lara will never die.  So excited for the next installment!

Neeeeeeeeeeeeeed it.

What Inspires Me

Last week was a rough week for rejections, but I made it through and I'm more fired up than ever to keep on querying. I'm getting good rejections - detailed personalised ones instead of forms.  So I've just got to hang in there and keep querying. To quote Lara, I can do this.

Have a great week everyone :D

  1. YAY! Congrats on finishing you WiP. Go get a cookie. (chocolate maybe?) thanks for sharing. :D

  2. Sorry to hear that last week was tough on the querying front, but it's great that you have such a positive attitude about it. And it's awesome that you finished your draft of Violin!Story! Nicely done! I love that you wrote it just for yourself and because the idea wouldn't let go. Hope one of those new ideas takes hold the same way! :)

    1. Thanks ^_^

I hope a new idea takes hold, but at the moment a break is just what I need.

  3. Congrats on finishing Violin!Story! That's really fantastic. It's always good to have a story that's only for you.

Your attitude about rejection is very inspiring. I haven't gotten to the querying stage yet so I can't imagine how tough that must be. Keep on keeping on though. You CAN do it! :)

    Have a great week!

  4. Congratulations on finishing Violin!Story! And keep on querying! It wasn't the route I wanted to take, because it's so slow and so fraught with misery, but I really admire people who go the querying route. Getting personalized rejections is a very good thing, even if it doesn't feel like it at the time. Have a wonderful week!

    1. Fraught with misery is a good way to put it, but it'll be worth it when I sign with an agent ^_^

      Thanks, you too!

  5. Great job on finishing your WIP! I'm with you on the rejections - three form ones so far this week. Ouch. Personalized responses are a sign you're on the right track, though! :)

    I can't wait for YALC! ^_^

Ouch, I've been getting them in batches, too. All that disappointment in one giant dose.

      See you Saturday!

  6. Congratulations on finishing your WIP! :) I think it's great you've written something just for yourself, and you've got the right attitude when it comes to rejections, too!

I must be a horrible person because I couldn't stop myself giggling just a little bit about those fish - oh dear!

    Have a great week! :)

  7. That's too bad about the rejections. Sorry to hear that. But it's good, at least, that you're getting detailed personalized ones. I like when agents take the time to do that. It really does help in the end, I think. Congrats on finishing up Violin!Story! Even if it is just for you, it's nice to know you finished it. Hope you have a wonderful week, Cole! :D

    1. All of them dislike different things :P At some point I'll have to find the energy to tweak the book again...

      Thanks, Jaime!

  8. Yay for finishing! I'm always amazed when that happens to me. I would really like to have something finished in my life right now!

  9. Congratulations on finishing your story! It's normal to feel a bit lost and empty after finishing a book, since it can feel like coming off a big high. It's taken me awhile to find my writing bearings again sometimes, particularly after finishing a longer book.

  10. I really think those thoughtful detailed rejections are worth their weight in gold (if they weren't digital, I mean-- wait-- this metaphor is failing). You know what I mean. Isn't it amazing that agents take the time to do that?

    1. lol! I could print them out so they did weigh something ;)

  11. Wow, that's a lot of words! Congratulations on finishing your novel. Editing is actually my least favourite thing to do so I'm glad I'm not the only one :P

And Tomb Raider is always good for taking your mind off of things!

    1. I don't mind editing, but I'm not sure that book is really the kind of story I ever want to develop into something worth querying. It's an idea that plenty of other people have done to death.

Tomb Raider fixes many woes ;)

  12. Congrats on finishing your WIP and I hope you find the perfect inspiration for you're next project!

  13. Yay to getting your WIP done. A little break inbetween stories to get that brain sorted out is never bad. Sorry to hear about the fish.:( And yay for helpful rejections even if they are rejections. But hey, all of us can wallpaper our living room with those ;) You'll get there!

  14. Sorry about the rejections, but that's good that they're personalized ones! You're getting closer! Also, yay for finishing Violin!WIP. I think anything like that is always a big accomplishment. Remember to give yourself a little time off!

Hope you have a good read and a good week! :)

  15. Congrats on finishing Violin!Story. 57K isn't really short if it's YA.

Rejections suck but sometimes nice personalized ones can be cool, and at least you're putting stuff out there, so that's super cool. You'll get an acceptance eventually. But I know it sucks to watch the rejections pile up. O.o

Yeah, that rejection pile sure is getting pretty thick.

  16. Rejections suck but it's always nice to get personalized ones. Don't give up!
Sounds like Violin story is one you love. It's nice to just write for yourself. That's how my first drafts are. After that I work on them for readers.

  17. Typing "The End" is always a cause for celebration.

And personalized rejections are a very good sign. They must have seen something they really liked to take the time.

    1. Do you know, I haven't celebrated properly yet. I need to get on that ;)

  18. Personalized rejections are definitely a step up from form rejections! It's all good. And I loved that link to your "epic fail." ROFL! I played it about five times. Hilarious. Have a great week!

  21. It's always an accomplishment to finish a new story. Sorry to hear about the fish and rejections, but you'll always have another chance. Well, at least with the queries. Keep on persevering!

    1. LOL! Yeah, the queries are no worries. The fish, unless the zombie apocalypse is here, aren't coming back...

  22. Yay for finishing your WIP! Rejections are never fun but in the run of them it's nice to get personalized ones. The requests will come!

    1. Alas, one of those rejections was on a full. Oh well! The agent who will love it is out there.

  23. Theoretically, fish and plants should be the two easiest things to take care of. And yet I end up killing both every single time.

Hopefully you get good news from your queries soon :)
