Rewards For The Little Goals and The Big Goals

It's important to have goals when you're writing, and rewards for when you achieve them.  I like to reward myself with cupcakes when I hit small goals, like hitting a particular word count, finishing a draft, or completing an edit...

Or, you know, encouragement to start a big project

But there are a few goals I haven't achieved yet that I still have rewards in mind for.  For instance, there's a restaurant in Brighton I intend to go to when I sign with an agent.  And for the day I get a book deal, I'll be booking myself into a nice hotel and having a spa day in Bath's amazing Thermae Spa (which I cannot recommend to you all enough).  Cake in the shape of a book is also a reward I intend to earn ;)

You deserve awards for your writing achievements. What have you earned? What are you looking forward to treating yourself with in the future?

  1. Good morning, Miss Cole! This is a great post, because I tend to forget to... ever... reward myself for meeting my goals.... ^^;;

    So, I should DEFINITELY start. Lemme think of some:

    Finishing my current WIP: Spending time completing Persona 3.

    Finishing a new draft/a new revision: PERSONA 4! :D

    Getting an agent: nice meal in the local Bandstand Bar (http://www.braevalhotel.co.uk/barandres.asp) which has a lovely view of the sea. Maybe the local SUPER POSH restaurant, even, The Classroom. (http://www.theclassroombistro.com/)

    Book Deal: I'd probably book a little writing get-away, due for whenever the edits come in. Moniack Mhor (http://www.moniackmhor.org.uk/) seems lovely but pricey, so I'd probably just book a trip over to Stornoway and hole up somewhere without wifi.

    Thinking of this sort of stuff if fun. I need to work on some smaller goals though to keep me motivated throughout. :)

    1. I like planning my BIG goals, too :D

      Oooh, The Classroom does look well posh. You'll have to go! And a Wifi-free zone for a book deal break sounds very smart indeed.

  2. Those are awesome rewards! ^_^ I need to write a list like that. When I first published, I was in the middle of university deadlines *sigh* (Though I did get to celebrate with my friends when I was done with my exams!) But I'll have to plan something super-exciting for when I get an agent! :)

  3. I love those ideas for rewards, especially the book cake. I usually have to bribe myself with food, maybe I should start rewarding instead. :)

  4. I have some silly "big goal" rewards in mind too. I usually try to treat myself to something related to the book, so when I finished by sea-faring fantasy, I went sailing on a tall ship. I love the cupcakes idea! I need to use that one more.

    1. Oh, that is so cool! I wish I could've taken a trip into space after finishing Colony :P

  5. Great post! I'm behind this all the way. I haven't planned out rewards for my big goals (mostly I've been thinking achieving them will be enough), but now I will!

    Some of my first goals will be subbing short stories to magazines. Reward myself for subbing and reward myself for when I get sold. Still working on my novel revision/rewrite. I need to plan a BIG reward for that one.
