What's Up Wednesday

Wednesday, hi, how are you? :D You know the drill by now. Join in the fun at Jaime and Erin's blogs :)

What I'm Reading

Finished Half Bad. I don't know how I feel about this book because I foolishly went into it thinking it was a one-off.  It really, really, really isn't.  ARGH!

It's super stylistic, which I liked, especially the use of second person perspective. It's a real treat to read when it's done right.

Now I'm reading Insanity by Susan Vaught.

What I'm Writing

48k. I know, I know. Really slowed down since my 27k week.  I'm aiming for a 60k draft. This book feels like it's winding up already, which is good because it was always just for me.  Once it's done, I need to get back to Dream!Story.

What Else I'm Up To

Having lots of fun playing my violin :D I'm currently working through the ABRSM Grade IV exam book and Grade V scales.  But as much as I love classical, I'm really enjoying getting to grips with Irish fiddle music... although it is waaay harder to play than it looks.

<3

I have such a wonderful violin teacher. She makes me feel really positive about my playing.

What Inspires Me

I really love this song from Lindsey Stirling's second album. It's got such an upbeat message, and I think it's a good post-rejection song ^_^

Have a great week, everyone! ^_^

  1. HALF BAD is really unique, isn't it? I found it impossible to put down.

Still sounds like you're making great progress! It's always nice to have a project just for you. :)

    1. It's definitely different. Still irked at the ending though :P

      Thanks!

  2. Sounds like you're doing amazing with your WiP, Cole! And I love that you play violin. I wish I would've stuck with an instrument when I was younger. My daughter wants to learn the fiddle so she can be another step closer to her dream of country music stardom. :-) Have a great week, and happy reading and writing!

It's a wonderful instrument and I'm sure your daughter will love it ^_^

  3. Lindsey Stirling is amazing. I've never seen anyone dance and play violin the way she does. Do you do that??? My daughter just got a violin, and I admit feeling a little jealous about it. Still, I love my piano. It sounds like you're getting close to finishing your WIP. Good luck with that this week! Have a great one.

    1. LOL, no, I can't dance and play at the same time XD Not yet, anyway...

Playing piano must be wonderful. So elegant!

      Thanks, and you :D

  4. Did you say you wrote 27,000 words in a week?! That's huuuge. Good job. Also, kudos for writing a novel just for yourself.
    Keep enjoying your writing.

    1. Yeah, back in May I did. That was a really unusual week :P

Thanks! Sometimes I think it's important to do something for yourself... and this book is pure self-indulgence, yay! :D

  5. That Lindsey Stirling song is so catchy! I may have to add it to my "feel good" music playlist. I always crank it up when I'm having a crappy day.

    1. It's a great one, isn't it? :D Definite pick-me-up playlist music.

  6. What a smart idea, to write just for yourself. I think that's a much better place to be in than trying to write for all the "others" that creep into our consciousness while writing. Also, I am really impressed with anyone who can play an instrument-- especially the violin. What a beautiful gift!

    1. Exactly, and that's why I did it. I realised too often I was thinking "will this idea get me an agent?", so I had to switch that off and do it for me.

Thank you! I love my violin and I'm so glad I finally got around to learning.

  7. Congrats on what you've done. I usually slow down at the end as well. I aimed for a 60K draft and came just under 59K.
I've always found string instruments interesting. I played flue all through school. Good luck.

    1. Thanks :D Yeah, the start of this book just wanted out, but the end is proving to be more of a slog. Nearly there though :D

      Thank you!

  8. I would so love to take what little violin experience/skill I have and apply it to learning fiddle. So hard, but so awesome! I think I would lower the action on my violin first, though. I think that sometimes helps with fiddling because it makes it a bit easier to play more than one string at once. From the sounds of it, you're doing awesome with the violin! As for your WiP, you're getting so close to that 60K mark. Just a bit more, Cole! Have a wonderful week! :D

    1. Yes, fiddling certainly demands multiple string usage, which I suck at :P My violin is definitely set up for classical... which is fine by me because I love playing it.

  9. Half Bad sounds interesting. I'e read a few second person stories that didn't work for me. I'll be sure to check it out when I have the change. Also 48K is still very impressive. Keep moving forward. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Only a few chunks of it are in second, but those sections were probably my favourite from a stylistic point of view.

      Thanks for reading :D

  10. I keep meaning to pick up Half Bad, but it's one of those books I keep hearing such mixed things about. As soon as I hear one reader praise it I'll hear another reader say they hated it - I'll just have to check it out for myself, I think! :)

I'm glad your violin teacher's good - nothing can put us off something like a bad teacher, and there's nothing more encouraging than a brilliant one. Good luck with that Irish fiddle music!

    Have a great week!

    1. I'm afraid to say I'm right in the middle on Half Bad - neither loved nor hated it. I certainly liked it, but I don't have really strong feelings either way.

      Cheers!

  11. I am all admiration that you're taking violin lessons. I played clarinet for about six months in 7th grade, but I am too lazy and was not passionate enough to keep practising. I do enjoy the music other people make, though. :)

    1. I picked up the violin in 2012 after spending the majority of my life wishing I could play. Time to make the wish a reality :D

    1. Isn't she? What an inspiration for any violinist :D

You'd be amazed at what you can learn with music. Until I started with my violin, I couldn't read music. I've got a long way to go, but it's coming together.

  14. 48K is very, very close to 50K, which is a lot closer to 60K. I think you should call it a win. :)

And learning Irish fiddle music sounds like so much fun!

Good luck with the writing and the music this week!

    1. Thank you ^_^ A win it is.

Fun, but tricky. You look at the sheet music and think "aw, that's all open strings, easy!" Then I try playing it and disaster :P

  15. Even if you've slowed down, you're still really close to your goal for your wip and that's great! Good luck with finishing it, and I like that you're writing something just for you. I think everyone should have a story like that. Have a good week! :)

  16. Good luck with your violin. My hubs' grandfather plays the fiddle and tours around Canada and the US over the summer. I've never seen him play though since he lived on the east coast and we live in the west. :(
48k is still awesome! Keep it up!

    1. Wow, that's cool! I don't think I'll ever tour with mine. It's just a fun hobby.

      Thanks!

  17. The violin! My sister played in school, but she hasn't picked it up in years. It's funny that your post brought this up because yesterday while we were walking the dog, we heard someone practicing violin, which got us talking about my sister's violin days. She still has it but she thinks the strings are all popped, haha.

You might've slowed down with your writing, but oh my goodness, you are nearly there! You sound like you're doing great with it. :)

  20. The violin is such a beautiful instrument. It's my second favorite melodic instrument (aside form the piano).

  21. 48k is a lot of words, and you should feel great about nearly finishing up this story, regardless how long it is. Writing just for you sounds lovely.

  22. Half Bad sounds really interesting! I'll have to check it out. Congrats on your progress with your WiP and your enthusiasm for the violin. Isn't it great when everything is just clicking into place? :) Have a great week!

  25. Great song by Lindsey Stirling! I'm not quite "slowing" on my latest draft, but I've hit a patch where I had some parts written already and now I'm sort of editing through them, so it suddenly feels like I'm not adding any word count. at. all.
