What's Up Wednesday

Wednesday, oh Wednesday, I read you as Wed-nes-day. You funny word, I love you so.  For you are the humpiest of days. Wednesday, oh, Wednesday, what is up, oh Wednesday.

^_^

Join in What's Up Wednesday with the lovely Jaime and Erin!

What I'm Reading

*sigh* It finally happened. I DNF'd The Girl With All The Gifts.  It's beautifully written, but I just couldn't get into it. I'm going to put it to one side and try again later.

I'm taking a little time out from reading because I'm kind of distracted by...

What I'm Writing

Ah, the life of a pantser.  There I was, minding my own business, when monsters decided to throw themselves into my still untitled WiP... Yaaaaaaaay!! Up to 15k, too :D I'd like to aim for 20k by next Wednesday...

What Else I'm Up To

Yesterday was my Mum's birthday and we had an awesome cake made for her.  It's a lemon drizzle and I can confirm it tastes amazing:

My brothers and I, represented by adorable ducklings :D

In music news, I'm finally getting to grips with Grade IV now for violin.  It's always a struggle, the initial transition from one grade to the next.  But if I ever doubt myself, I bust out one of my old books and play stuff I once struggled with and it's like "ooooh, great, I CAN BE TAUGHT!" :D

What Inspires Me

Spring.  Spring is in the air.  It's colder than all of winter, but the birds are singing, the daffodils are blooming and there's just that feeling of change in the air. Aaah, lovely!

But the cold is helpful when you're WiP is all about snow and ice and ice and snow and frost and, you know, cold things!

  3. Cake looks lovely. Best of luck with Grade VI, although, uh, I don't know what that means. Next level in difficulty?

Have you ever fiddled around with the cello? My favorite instrument. I used to play bass guitar. Now I have a classical guitar I fool around with.

    1. Ooh, Grade IV not VI. No way am I ready for VI yet ^^; And yeah, next difficulty level. Time to learn some new positions! Yay!

I haven't played the cello but I really want to. That and piano ^_^

  4. That's a cute cake, Cole! I hope your mum had a lovely birthday--I'm sure she did. :)

And a round of applause to you for sticking with the violin and digging in with Grade IV. Going back and reminding yourself of the progress you've made is a great way to spur you on when the going gets tough. This can be a good inspirational technique with writing, too. If you ever get to a moment of self-doubt, pull out a piece of writing you're proud of, or that a lot of people gave you great feedback on. Remind yourself, "I can do this."

Have a great week, Cole! :D

And Happy Birthday to your Mom! So nice that you could share it with her.

Hope you have an amazing week, and good luck getting to that 20K mark :)

  9. I hate it when I DNF a book. And it has been happening a lot lately, which makes me sad :(

Oh, nice word count on the WIP! *high five*

Omg, that cake is so cute!!

Dude, send some of Spring this way. It's still TOO damn cold here.

    Have a great week!

  10. The ducklings on that cake remind me of the frosting Sesame Street creations from one of the Pittsburgh bakeries my parents and I frequented when I was four and we were temporarily back in the city. Are they made of frosting or crystallised sugar, or plastic?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They're made of sugar, but the great thing is they'll keep so Mum decided not to eat them ^_^

  11. That cake looks too cute to eat. But more important, you were attached by your muse. Yay! I hope the momentum keeps going. Happy writing!

  13. I hate it when the writing in a book is beautiful, but can't seem to drag into the plot...sigh...oh well, hopefully you have better luck next time. I'm also a pantser and I love it. It's crazy, and often frustrating, but I wouldn't want it any other way. That cake looks amazing, I hope it tasted as good too!

    1. It had some great moments, but I just couldn't stay engaged. Never mind, there will always be another book.

I am and always will be a pantser.

      The cake is delicious :D

  15. Monsters make good writing motivation! Congrats on all the words and I hope it continues on!

  16. Love the cake! I actually put a random monster into my WIP to escape from the corner I wrote myself into last week, but I might end up taking it out in the next draft. :P

    1. That's the joy of drafting - get through it anyway you can and sort it all out later ;)

  17. That cake is fantastic! Such adorable little ducklings.

I wish spring was in the air here. It's gets to below freezing at night, still no sign of the daffodils, and it sounds like there might be more snow in our future. I'm ready for warm.

  18. What a cute cake. It sounds delicious too! Your WiP is really coming along, and I'm kind of intrigued by the monsters thing. :-) I wish we could do a little swap: you can take the snow/cold/ice and we'll take the "spring is in the air" weather. Sound good? ;-)

    1. I'm intrigued about the monsters, too! Who knows where they'll take me :P

Let's swap! I need some winter inspiration ;)

  19. Love the cake SO much! When my son was little, for whatever reason, he was completely obsessed with rubber ducks and collected them. For one of his birthdays, I made a cake with blue Jell-o water on top and a ducky candle. I feel all nostalgic now.

I'm jealous that you actually have flowers blooming where you live. We were plunged into the deep freeze AGAIN this past week. This is getting weird even for Canada. have fun with those monsters in your WIP this week! :D

  22. Whooo, keep up the writing streak!! And that is a fantastic cake! Lol. And I am glad spring is in the air on the other side of the pond, because...not her. Not here. NO.

Also, I am totally applying your approach to leveling up in violin to writing right now. The whole "Oh yeah, I can be taught!" mentality is great. I might go do that with a former manuscript later. :)

Have a great rest of your week!

    1. I've done it with writing, too. I'll re-read something I thought was amazing a few years ago and marvel at the things I'd do differently now.

Enjoy your icy WIP! Mine is sett in snow and ice too. I think an ice cave is about to make an appearance. One with a smooth floor so my characters can ice skate in it.
