What I'm Reading

I did a speed read of Colony to put the finishing touches on it before querying. If you ask me, it's a pretty amazing book :P

Then I read Retribution Falls and was not a fan.  Just couldn't connect to the story.  Shame.  I've enjoyed Chris Wooding's books in the past, especially The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray which was one of the first alternate history books I ever read.

I returned to the Jack Reacher series because I knew I'd get a good, solid thriller for my money. I also get to boast that I successfully cracked the case about 300 pages before the characters, mostly because I've watched so many episodes of Criminal Minds. Go Team Cole XD

Now I'm reading a book called Pines by Blake Crouch. Hooray for the Kindle Lending Library!

What I'm Writing

So, with Colony querying (EEEEEEEEEEEEE!), I did the only sensible thing....

I started writing a new book! Aaaand that's all I'm saying :P Don't wanna scare it off.

What Else I'm Up To

Work. Check back next week :p

What Inspires Me

Even though I haven't had a chance to watch a lot of it, the Winter Olympics.  Watching skiing and skating has made me want to set a story in the middle of an extremely cold winter... which is precisely the opposite of the blustery, watery one we're having in the UK.

And, okay, I warned y'all last week I had trouble picking just one, but OMG HAVE YOU LISTENED TO THIS SOUNDTRACK?! HAVE YOU!?!?!?!

I really enjoy the film, but ooooh my goooooosh the soundtrack is scrambling its way up my top five list.  Only time will tell if it'll topple my all time favourite...

  1. I love cracking cases in books and TV shows too. That's half the fun of it!

I don't want to scare off your new idea, but it's super exciting that you're writing something new! I hope the ideas and the words are unfolding nicely! I just sent out some more queries this week too, so I'm in the same nervous boat as you. Wishing you lots of luck and requests!

I think it's great that the Olympics are inspiring you. Me too :)

  2. Hiya

I have been watching the olympics too. Love the ice skating. My daughters are glued to the screen when it comes on.

    Yay on writing something new.

    Have a great week.

  3. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU FOR HTTYD 2? BECAUSE I'M REALLY EXCITED.

(I'm more excited about Colony being out there in the query wilds, though!)

  4. That's greta that you've started something new, best way to distract yourself :D Good Luck with the querying, fingers crossed.

  5. Happy writing on your new book idea!

Unless it's obvious, I'm so bad about figuring out the ends of mystery/thriller books/TV/movies. Sometimes, even when the bad person is caught, I think there will be a twist. I think I've watched way too many soap operas where the baddie turns out to be a long-lost and previously unknown twin or someone that's come back from the dead after a decade.

  6. Good luck with querying and with your new project! :)

  7. Starting something new is probably the best way to handle querying. I've been working on new stuff since my First Readers poured over my ms. I'll probably continue while it's in the hands of Beta Readers. And I daresay I'll be using SNIs to keep my fingers off Outlook's refresh button while I'm querying. :)

Oh, and if you want to do research for a novel set in a bitterly cold location, most places in North America would suit your needs just fine right now. ;)

Have a great week, Cole. May you get a lot of positive query responses!

    1. I've been way more distracted this time than I was the last time I queried. Feels pretty good :D

LOL, yeah, I see NC has had some terrible weather!

Thanks, Colin! Best of luck with the editing.

  10. I think a book set in a really cold winter would be awesome. Not to many of the books I read are set in chilly climes, so it would be kind of nice to read something like that for a change. Yay for your new project! (I made sure to whisper yell that so as not to scare it off.) Hope your querying goes really well, Cole! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Oh, and as for the Olympics, I'm hooked! But I'm sure you knew that already. ;-)

The Olympics are fantastic. I've been watching a ton of the ice skating (on right now as a matter of fact) and I'm SO excited that men's hockey started today.

  15. Querying is really exciting/terrifying. Exciting because all your work is finally out there in the world, and terrifying for the obvious reasons :)
Best of luck! I hope to start querying again in March.

Haven't quite hit the honeymoon period with the new book yet, but with my last one it was pretty much one endless honeymoon :P
