What's Up Wednesday!

Hi everyone! It's time for another What's Up Wednesday, HOORAY! You can join in at Jaime and Erin's blogs ^_^

What I'm Reading

Finished Tripwire. Really enjoyed it, once I got into it.  Then I picked up The Echo, a continuation to a book called The Explorer.  If you like your sci-fi to be somewhat literary, this is the (extremely grim) series for you! Then I read Vicious, which was a darkly entertaining twist on the whole superhero genre.  And now I'm back to Tom Clancy with Clear and Present Danger.

What I'm Writing

Still editing my query and synopsis.  Here's hoping I'll be querying within the next week or two!

What Else I'm Up To

Started Grade IV on the violin last week ^_^ And then my poor violin's E string decided it couldn't handle it and gave out ^^; Got to get it replaced this weekend.

Went to London on Saturday and helped my lovely friend choose her wedding dress. She is going to look amazing. It's the perfect dress for her. I can't wait to share photos with you all in May.

Oh, and of course, I saw Jack Ryan:Shadow Recruit and really enjoyed it :D It's short and snappy, which is how I like my films.  It also had loads of nice little character touches that tied in with the books which made me happy and we made it, oh, maybe 20 minutes in before the word Soviet cropped up, which was perfect ;) Can't have anything based on Tom Clancy's work and not have that word used at least once. So, if you're looking for something to go see, I recommend it!

What Inspires Me

JAIME'S WRITING TROLLEY! oh my gosh, did you guys see it last week?! I kinda totally went and ordered one from Ikea... Hopefully it'll arrive today :D

The Tron:Legacy OST found its way back into my life... It's just amazing.  Still ranks as my favourite of all time.

Have a great week everyone :D

  1. Ooooh, you're getting a writing trolley too? You have to post pictures. :D I love the idea!

I just write in the same place every day, though, so it's not something I could use. (Still tempted, though, just for the cool factor.)

    1. It's currently sitting in a box but I'll fix it up tonight. I'm mostly going to use it as a desk extension, because mine's quite narrow. I'm so excited about setting it all up :D

  2. Ooh, wedding dress shopping -- so fun! I can't wait to see the photos this spring. Best of luck getting your query and synopsis polished. I'm sending positive query vibes your way!

    1. It was a lot of fun ^_^ My friend has such amazing taste. Cheers! I'll probably be pretty quiet about querying, but I'll be sure to share good news ;)

I know. I'm so grateful to Jaime for sharing ^_^

  4. Good luck with your query and your synopsis. I really enjoyed your post earlier this week on rejection and all that. While you're prepared for it, here's to hoping that's not how this round of querying goes :)

  5. Good luck with querying :) Synopses are evil. I hate writing them. However, I love wedding dresses! I'd wear them around all the time if that didn't make me completely crazy haha.

    1. I'm blaming my cold on how rubbish my most recent attempt at a synopsis was :P

Life's short! Do what you want! Wear ALL THE WEDDING DRESSES!

  6. You and Jaime make me want a writing trolley! Sadly, mine would be filled with a computer and panic. That's the way I get stuff done.

Yay to getting ready to query (it's not all bad, and like anything else, your perspective makes all the difference.) Good luck!

    1. Aw! Mine's mostly going to be an extension of my rather narrow desk.

      Thanks!

  7. I think I have to rewatch PATRIOT GAMES and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER now. :) Best of luck with your query polishing, and enjoy the writing trolley! It is so cute.

    1. I just watched Patriot Games and it turned out I'd only seen the first half hour or so. Much like Red October, it's a great summary of the book. I'm going to watch Clear and Present Danger once I've finished the book :)

  8. Bah, I remember when I got my wedding dress ... almost 10 years ago LOL It was so much fun!
I want to watch Jack Ryan:Shadow Recruit! Bet I'll like it too.
I listen to Tron's soundtrack quite a bit too. Can't wait for the next movie, if they didn't give up on it yet. I hope not!

      You should! It's a great film ^^

I hope not. I want another Daft Punk OST!

  9. Good luck with your query writing. Once you have a writing trolley to go with your shiny new query, you will be unstoppable. I hope you have a great week.

  10. Okay, I literally just laughed out loud right now when I saw my writing trolley under your inspiration section...bahahaha! I hope it gets to you today! You'll have to post pics. ;-) And querying in a week or two? So exciting!!

    1. :D You're welcome! I saw it last week and realised it solved all my space-related issues! I no longer need to spend hundreds on a new desk! HOORAY!

  11. I've heard so many amazing things about Vicious! I hate writing a synopsis, even more than a query! That's saying something. Good luck on both. It's awesome you got to help pick your friend's wedding dress, so exciting. And then there's London. I will get there some day.

    1. It's a good book ^_^

You should visit London. It's a phenomenal city <3

  12. You ordered the writing trolley?! I am impressed. You see what you want and you get it. I'm so indecisive that even though I just bought this new computer (that I am typing on right now) I'm not sure I want to keep it. It's so different and its stressing me out! And I want to "go into London." Sounds fab!

    1. I had to. Saw it, wanted it, had it. Life's too short :P

I live about an hour south of London, so it's an easy commute. Phew! I love that city :D

  13. Good luck with your query and synopsis. I'd recommend the Pitch University website if it were still active, since I got a lot of great advice and encouragement there in the days I was interested in traditional publishing. It was probably the friendliest query advice place I found.

  14. I was wondering about Shadow Recruit. Nice to know you liked it. *adds to movie list*

And good luck with your query and synopsis. I've gone from hating queries to sort of liking them. The word "synopsis" still sends shivers down my spine. ;)

    Hope your week is lovely!

    1. I really enjoyed it. Good plot, just the right mix of action and tension and, oh, yeah, CHRIS PINE ^_^ What could go wrong? :p

One of these days I'll find a way to nail a synopsis. ONE DAY!!!

  15. That trolley was amazing, wasn't it? If my place wasn't so small I'd be getting one too!

    1. It sure is! Mine's not quite as artistically arranged as Jaime's, but it's so handy! I can't get a bigger desk in my office, and I've had this one since I was 16, so I had to find a way of making more room. CUE TROLLEY!

  16. I was trying to push that trolley out of my mind and now I remember how very much I want one. It was so perfect looking! I have a feeling my toddler would push it into all sorts of places I wouldn't want it to go but when he is bigger, I want one!!!

    1. You should get one, keep it in the box and build it when the little one is old enough to know he can't roll it around ;)

  17. I have VICIOUS on my TBR--it did look interesting. And I'm sorry to hear about the demise of your E-string. I'm used to guitar strings going, and it can be a real pain if you don't have a spare set handy. Hopefully violin strings aren't too expensive. All the best with Grade IV, Cole. I had a friend at school who got to Grade VII violin, then switched to viola, so I'm aware of the amount of work that goes into learning pieces, practicing, etc. It's good you're enjoying it so much--that'll carry you through the times others would quit.

    1. Interesting it is. I read it in a day. It's really hard to talk about without spoiling something, but it's definitely a good book.

Yeah, I don't keep spare strings but this isn't the first one I've had to replace.

Wow, viola. My teacher told me it's so different to violin. Your friend must be super talented! I'm tempted to try cello in the future, but for now I just love my violin ^_^ Thanks for the support, Colin :D

Yeah, I think I learned my lesson on that last time. Send them, then turn the laptop off and do something else. I'm hoping my violin skills will improve drastically during this time ;)

  19. Oh I'm so glad to hear the new Jack Ryan movie was good! We might go see it soon if we can find a night that works.

And Tron: Legacy, yay!!! You know how much I love that soundtrack. Is it weird that I want to live in The Grid? Last night, while brainstorming for my WIP's ending, I was listening to some Lindsey Stirling. That got the wheels turning. So glad you introduced me to her music!

I'm SO jealous of Jaime's trolley. I need to get one, but the shipping costs on it here are insane and the closest IKEA is five hours away. Boo. Have a great week, Cole, and good luck with the query and synopsis edits! :D

    1. I hope you can. It's a great film. And I need to go get the soundtrack XD

I do know. You are one of the people I know understands the sheer wonder of that music ^_^ You are so welcome for the Lindsey Stirling introduction, too. I can't wait for her to release new stuff.

I was quite lucky with the shipping. Ikea's just far enough away that the shipping total was cheaper than the petrol I would've used driving there myself.

  22. Well, I've already seen your writing trolley and it looks great! I also agree that Daft Punk's TRON soundtrack is fab! It was possibly my favorite part of the movie, haha.

I am seriously dying to read VICIOUS, so I'm really glad that you liked it! I just need to find the time, but...AFTER London! Congrats to your friend, by the way! All my wedding-related activities were last year, but since then I'm so into seeing other people's wedding-related fashion and designs! :)

  25. I totally almost ordered that trolley too, but then I got side tracked. Now I want to do that again. It looks so pretty. I wish I was that organized.

Good luck with polishing up your query and synopsis! I'm hoping to start querying again in late Feb/early March. It's a long, difficult process but it's a relief to get it started.
