What's Up Wednesday

Hiya! It's the most bloggy time of the week! Join in yourself at Jaime and Erin's blogs :D

What I'm Reading

I finished Die Trying last week.  It was a good, solid thriller.  I really enjoyed it.  Unlike the first Jack Reacher book, this one was written in 3rd person and it delivered a broader story.  That said, I do hope there's another book from the first person perspective. It worked really well in Killing Floor.

Then I read The Cardinal of the Kremlin and IT WAS AWESOME OMG! KGB spies! CIA spies! Secret documents! Double agents! Exciting spy adventures! It was super tense.  It also focused on the Soviet war in Afghanistan.  Much like Patriot Games, The Cardinal of the Kremlin is such a product of its era, reading it today means knowing the long-term consequences of that conflict.  It's what makes Tom Clancy's books so fascinating.  I really wish I'd read them when I was studying the Cold War.  I probably would've written a dissertation on them.  Overall, I think this book might be my favourite in the Jack Ryan series so far.

After all the thrillers, I decided to take a short break and read a YA fantasy recommended to me by my brother.  The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson has a great concept, a really fascinating alternate Earth setting and a great mystery.  Plus I really liked the character Melody.  What can I say, I can really relate to a fellow misfit redhead ;)

Basically, I recommend all of the books I have read thus far for my 50 in 2014 :P

Now, onto book number 8 of 2014! Back to Jack Reacher for me :D

What I'm Writing

Space!Story, otherwise known as Colony, is finished! Well, aside from a few tweaks here and there. Turns out I actually can be a perfectionist.  The lovely Robin is helping out, too :D  I am now editing the query letter and synopsis.  Funny, they seemed pretty well-written before Christmas... ^^;

What Else I'm Up To

My friends and I went to Bluebell Railway at the weekend.  Fun times were had by all :D

What Inspires Me

I've been listening to lots of Tchaikovsky lately ^_^ I find his music so relaxing.

Have a wonderful week!

  1. This is the third week in a row you've mentioned an author my husband loves. He's into Brandon Sanderson's books too. Seriously, you're making me think I need to raid his book collection! He doesn't have THE RITHMATIST, but a misfit redhead character? I need to read that one too!

Have fun editing your query and synopsis. I just did the same thing. It's such a pain to work on them, but once it's done, it's exciting to have nice concise descriptions of your story, isn't it?

Love the pics of you and your friends! Looks like you had a blast! Have a super week, Cole! :D

  3. I really like the name Colony, sounds like a book I'd pick up:D

The BlueBell Railway looks lovely, I keep meaning to take my son on it, although Planes have replaced his trains obsession since Christmas. Thomas is out, Dusty Crophopper is in!

I've never read nay Jack Reacher, but I've heard good thing. I might try it I wanted to read outside my comfort zone this year.

      Poor Thomas!

You should definitely give them a go. They're good thrillers :D

  5. I think it would be fun to write a spy novel, or a thriller along the lines of Reacher, Bond, or Ryan. A compelling story hasn't jumped into my head yet, so it's not happening anytime soon. But I'm game if a lonely idea is looking for a home. :)

All the best with the query and synopsis, Cole. :)

  6. I think most of the Reacher books are 3rd person, but a few are in 1st.

I crank up Chopin sometimes for relaxing times, but I'm pretty sure I have a Tchaikovsky CD somewhere, too.

Good luck with editing your query and synopsis!

  7. Congrats on having SpaceStory done and readying yourself for the query trenches! Pack lots of chocolate. The query trenches need more chocolate. ;)

Thanks for the great thriller recommends. I haven't read a thriller in a while, but I love spies and intrigue.

    Hope your week is marvelous!

  9. Love the actual title for Space!Story. :-) I don't envy one in the middle of writing up a query letter and a synopsis. Gah! I'm so, so terrible at them. Love the pictures, Cole. Especially the one of you grinning with the sun on your gorgeous red locks. Hope you have a great week and that the query/synopsis thing sorts itself out nicely.

  17. I have Tchaikovsky on my writing playlist- it's great as background music, except when I find myself humming along to the Nutcracker. I took Jaime's advice and I'm listening to the Ender's Game soundtrack right now and it's great! (Not so relaxing though.)
    Good luck with the query.

  19. Ooh, reading about the books you just read got my heart all a'fluttering. I'm a huge Cold War junkie myself (my father was a huge Tom Clancy et al fan, so that was a big part of my childhood).

The trip looks like it was a blast. Getting away with friends is always a good call!

  27. CONGRATS on finishing Space!Story and giving it such a fantastic title! I'm always so impressed by people's good titles because I s-t-r-u-g-g-l-e with them.
I love Sanderson's style of writing. I read him because he finished up the Wheel of Time series after Jordan died and did a fantastic job with it. I'm definitely going to check out his other stuff, but whether I do The Rithmatist first or his Mistborn books, I haven't yet decided.

My brother recommended him based on how he finished The Wheel of Time. It's a fantastic fantasy novel.
