What's Up Wednesday!

Come and join in with Erin and Jaime's What's Up Wednesday bloghop!

What I'm Reading

Slower reading week this week (see next section ;)).  I finished Russian Roulette which was... eh, alright, I suppose.

I'm now reading Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff and so far, so intriguing! Japanese steampunk OOOOOH!

What I'm Writing

So, the reason I didn't read that much is because, as mentioned on Monday, Space!Story's entire middle section had to be rewritten. 10,000 words were lost... soooo yeah, that wordcount I was talking about last week? If I manage to get it back to 80,000, I'll be impressed. Right now I'm looking at 77-78,000

I did pick up a great file for carrying my editing around in yesterday though:

Perfect, no? ;)

What Else I'm Up To

Decided to replay the Tomb Raider reboot.  I must be getting old though. I'm forever thinking "Lara, you look cold, STEAL A JUMPER!" or "Okay, you know what? Stop running around and find some antibiotics or you are going to die HORRIBLY. That old piece of metal SKEWERED YOU!" Gone are the days when I used to play a Tomb Raider game and unquestioningly lead a shorts-and-vest clad Lara around through snow.

In violin news, I'm playing Grade III music now. I've been playing for a year in November and I reckon I've done pretty well to go from having no idea how a violin works or being completely unable to read music to reaching Grade III in that time ^_^

What Inspires Me

...Soooo... NaNoWriMo inspiration struck courtesy of my iPod's shuffle mode...

Firstly, ACTION:

Secondly, MYSTERY!

Not sure I'll be taking part in NaNo this year... but we'll see...

  1. Love that work-in-progress folder! Sounds like your rewrites are going well. And Laura is a super break filler ;)

  2. I have a challenge for you! A friend recommended 'The Rook' by Daniel O'Malley. I wasn't able to get past the first couple of chapters but maybe you'll do better. It's 59p on Kindle. Read it all the way through (or just try the free sample), let me know what you think and I'll owe you a Coke.

  4. I'm still trying to decide about NaNo, as well. I have 2 MS's I'm revising and kind of want one to be pretty before adding another to the pile. But I will miss the energy of NaNo is I don't do it...
Way to write 10K this week and I <3 your editing folder:D

    1. Yeah, my revisions are my top priority and I'm not sure I'll have them done by November. But, as you say, I don't want to miss out. Oooh, it's a tough one!

  5. LOVE the "Work in Progress" file!

  6. LOL at the video game comments, that sounds like me, always wondering about everything that happens, instead of just playing.

    Great folder!

    1. Well, it's a great cause for concern! Forget all the leaping and climbing she does, she'd be busy dying horribly from nasty infections or hypothermia!

  7. I've long wanted to learn the violin, but for whatever reasons, I've never taken lessons. I'm probably too old now to learn it as virtuosticly as a child or teenager.

I've started books during November since 2010, inspired by NaNo, but haven't done it as part of NaNo. The books are way over 50K anyway, and wouldn't have been finished in only a month.

    1. You're never too old! I am neither a child nor a teenager and I'd never had proper music lessons until I picked up my violin. Do it. You'll surprise yourself :)

  8. That folder looks so cool!

I read so many contrasting reviews of Stormdancer - the cover is so pretty and the premise is intriguing - I want to know what you think!

Interested to hear what you think of STORMDANCER when you're done! I've been thinking of reading it.

  11. My husband and I were watching some documentary thing, and there was a doctor on it named Lara Croft. Totally cracked up. :P That's brutal that you had to lose so many words in Space!Story, and as trite as it may sound, I'm sure your story will be better for it in the end. You know, if you felt the need to remove those words in the first place. I think going with your gut is usually a very, very good idea. (At least from personal experience anyway.) Love the file, too! Very appropriate. :-)

    1. Hahaha, a real life Lara Croft. Who'd've thought it!

No, you're right, it will definitely be better. It feels better. Just gotta make sure I plug all my holes :P

  13. I think your word count is still right in the sweet spot. If you cut stuff that needed to be cut, your story is probably A LOT better for it.

  14. I never played the Lara Croft games, though I tried the most recent one out at a friends. The third person perspective is tough for me, I'd rather play that type of game first person. The game is cool though, I just sucked at the mechanics, it felt clumsy to me, though maybe you just get used to it.

    1. You definitely get used to it, and it's a lot of fun... which is a weird thing to say when so much of it is combat... :P

  15. That is an awesome folder! I haven't started criticizing video game characters yet (at least not for running around in the snow) but I have been getting worse at suspending disbelief at movies.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to do NaNo this year, too, but it's looking less and less likely. Especially as I just now realized that it's next month. Good luck with edits!

    1. With films I find if I'm enjoying something enough, I simply do not care how impossible it is. If I'm not entertained, I'll shred it to pieces.

How did this year go by so fast? Eeep!

  16. Steal a jumper? Hahaha! You're too funny and I have to admit, I think the same darn thing whenever I see her. That's an awesome folder. Very motivational! Rewriting is such a painful process, especially when you have to lose so many words. Hang in there!
