What's Up Wednesday

Wednesday is upon us again.  Join in with Jaime and Erin's What's Up Wednesday!

What I'm Reading

So, I finished Stormdancer.  A lot of you wanted to know what I made of it.  Hmmm... well, I liked it.  I didn't love it, but I definitely didn't hate it.  I can understand why people wouldn't like it, but the world-building is pretty spectacular.  As a whole though it just didn't inspire stronger reactions in me, and I've definitely read better steampunk.

I'm now reading The Rook on my Kindle, seeing as my eldest brother challenged me last week. Owe me a coke or a tea, Jaffa! It's a strange book, but it's not too bad. In paperback, I'm reading a compilation of short stories by George Mann set in his Newbury and Hobbes Steampunk universe which is fantastic.

Aaah, TBR pile, you will not beat me.

What I'm Writing

I finished the paper edit of Space!Story :D HOORAY! Now I'm going through my notes, adding things here (practically none of my characters have physical descriptions. FAIL!), deleting things there, and getting it in shape for the betas :D AND I STILL LOVE THIS BOOK!

What Else I'm Up To

Entering into the busy half of October... Gulp.

Finding Grade III violin really tricky, but a good kind of tricky.  It's forcing me to learn a lot of new skills and heeeeeeeellllloooooo third position.

What Inspires Me

Got my autumn storm wish ;) Lots of wind and rain and such a lovely chill in the air.  Aaaaah, lovely!

Yesterday the centre of the city was evacuated due to a fire in the mall.  Thankfully no one was hurt, but it's so weird seeing usually busy places mostly abandoned.

I feel the need for some appropriately ominous music...

I love brooding strings.

Have a great week, everyone!

  1. Great to see you still love your book after those edits. And glad to hear no one was hurt in the fire.

    1. I'm glad too. Thankfully it started before the mall was open to the public. The staff are certainly lucky.

I love it sooooooo much! I can't wait for this book to be ready for the world of querying :D

  2. My TBR pile is pretty ridiculous, too! It's great that you still love your book after all the edits. Sometimes I do, other times I never want to see it again! :P

    1. I'm slowly tackling it. I've held off buying more books... for now anyway :P

I can't believe how much I still love this book. Normally I go through the love/hate stages, but not with Space!Story.

  3. Hooray for loving a book in the midst of edits! And good luck with this busy half of October!

  4. Congrats on finishing your edits! And the fact that you still love your story is a really good sign. Usually, at that point, I'm ready to set fire to the manuscript.

I love that first chill in the air too. Although where I live, "chill" is 75 degrees. :) Still feels like fall though, albeit on a relative scale.

Hope you have a fantastic week!

    1. Ta! Nope, my love for it grows and grows!

      Relative indeed ;)

      Cheers!

  5. I'll never beat my TBR pile. I have about 40 unread paperback/hardcover books on my shelf, and about 200 on my kindle - and my TBR on goodreads has 400 books, I think LOL
Glad you still like your book. There's always a time when I want to toss mine across the room =P

  6. I think I can say with certainty that my TBR has already beaten me. There's no way I will ever conquer that surly beast. :P That is fantastic that you're still in love with Space!Story after spending time editing it. A major feat! I hear you on the description thing. Setting is the element I frequently forget to describe because it's so vivid in my head. (So naturally it must be the same in the reader's head...despite the fact I haven't described it.) Still, there's something to be said for spotting these issues and knowing exactly what to tackle, right? Have a great week, Cole, and good luck with violin!

  7. I'm a tad worried my TBR pile is beating me at the moment. *Shakes fist* I am determined to get through it.

  8. It's such a great feeling to love your WIP, isn't it? Yay on finishing paper edits!

There were fall storms in my neighborhood this past week, too. After Day 3, I got a little tired of the sogginess, though.

    1. It is! I love it so much and I really hope an agent will too! :D

      Stormy weather inspires me, but yeah, the sogginess isn't the best ^^;

  9. Yay for still loving your story and for chilly, rainy days. I love those too. I'm hoping that my TBR pile doesn't beat me but I think it might... Its gigantic. Oh well. I will do my best!

  12. I noticed that a lot of my characters had little to no physical description too! Whoops! It's great that you still love the book and keep up with the edits!
Great song. I have a thing for sad classical music and this fits right in.

    1. I don't like to be super detailed because I love the idea of the characters looking however the reader wants them to look.... buuuuuut they need something ^^;

It's a beautiful piece of music, isn't it?

  13. We had a nice fall thunderstorm last week, too. And yesterday it rained and rained and rained, a nice soft soak. We needed it after a drought-filled summer. Have a wonderful week!

  16. Oh, the violin! I remember hitting a phase with the cello when I was like, "Wait, I know all these positions now...WHY PLAY ANYTHING THE EASY WAY ANYMORE?? MWAHAHA!!!" and my cello teacher was like "please stop." Haha.

The struggle with the TBR pile continues...Same here. Mine has been put on hold, mostly. I'm glad you're enjoying your books!

    1. Yeah, third position and I aren't the best of friends yet... BUT WE WILL BE! I'm still really new to the whole concept, so if I manage to land my fingers in the right place first time I'm pretty chuffed with myself ^_^

  17. Yay for still loving your book and for finishing an edit! Go you!

Thanks for your thoughts on Stormdancer. That was a book that I had been excited for, but one of my friends who tried to read it wasn't that taken with it. Another friend also recommended The Rook, so interested in your thoughts on that as well!

I'm not a fan of rain (mostly because I hate driving in it), but I agree chilly rainy weather is great for writing/reading.

I'll be reporting back on The Rook next week ^_^ Alas, I wanted more from Stormdancer and didn't get it. Oh well!

  18. Good luck with the edits! You're getting there!

Wow, it is strange seeing those pictures with nobody there. Kind of looks like a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie. :)

  19. Oh, to still be in love with your book after making edits!!! Such a huge accomplishment, indeed!
And congrats on learning 3rd position!!! :) Oh, I remember that well...best of luck with what's to come!
And those pictures are eerie...it's always strange to see normally heavily populated places, so vacant. Glad no one was hurt though!

Yeaaaah, every time I feel like I've got it all under control, the violin throws something new at me. I am a loooooooooooooong way from any kind of proficiency, but I'm way better than I was :D

  20. I've read a lot of reactions like that to Stormdancer, which is why I probably won't read it even though the cover SLAYS me lol.

Yay for the crisp fall air!

      Yay, indeed :D

  21. Congrats with the progress on your edits, Cole! And it's nice to see autumn's arrived SOMEWHERE in the world. It doesn't want to drop below 70F here during the day. It's supposed to be 80F tomorrow. *sigh*!

    Have a great week. :)

  23. It is really weird to see busy places so empty. I watched an episode of top gear not that long ago where one of the big Spanish cities had just been abandoned. It came across as so eerie and strange. You sound like you are doing great with your TBR pile. Mine just seems to grow and grow, there are just so many great books I want to read right now. I've been reading a lot the last few days so am a bit slow and behind in other areas. Hence my late trip round the What's up Wednesday posts. Hope you have a great weekend :)
