What's Up Wednesday!

Welcome to the first What's Up Wednesday of August ^_^ If you want to join in, stop by at Jaime and Erin's blogs to sign up :D

What I'm Reading
Pictured: The next book you should read

I'm reading the next book in the steampunk series I started last week and so far it's every bit as good. I really like the continuity of these books and the world building is fabulous... I love how it's not quite the London we know and yet it leaps off the page like you could be a part of it yourself.   I just can't recommend it enough! GO FORTH AND READ!

What I'm Writing

As I revealed on Monday, RainyCity!Story is currently dead. It may be revived in the future, but for now it's stalled...

...but my new project is coming along quite nicely! To my surprise, it's an urban fantasy.  I haven't written anything but sci-fi in years.  Like years and years. I think it'll be good fun! I don't want to scare it off, so that's all I'll say for now...

What Else I'm Up To

I've been working a lot lately, so I decided to treat myself...

...Okay, no, I'm lying. I did not buy myself a Composition book...

...I should clean the screen...

Ta da!!!!! It's my shiny new Kindle! My main motivation was to have an easier method of carrying out my big picture edit. I used my old e-reader and a notebook last time, but now I can input notes straight into the MS...

...Also it turns out having an e-reader with WiFi is kind of addictive in the book buying sense... *COUGH* I've firmly decided to continue buying hardbacks or paperbacks for series I've already begun.  The thought of having half hard copies and half e-copies actually irritates the collector in me :P  So far my Kindle mostly has non-fiction on it... oh and my book!

I've also been swimming! Honestly, reading about all the exercise the rest of you get up to made me realise I need to do something too. The older child I look after had swimming lessons last week, so while she learned, I swam lengths.  I'm hoping to go twice a week outside of work. Yesterday I managed 650 metres (in the slow lane, hi there, asthma!) and today I hope to match that.  We'll see!

What Inspires Me

We had an insaaaaane thunderstorm here in the wee hours of Saturday morning. The house shook, the room lit up and just about everyone in Brighton startled out of sleep. I could hear various neighbours gasping and commenting in amazement. It was sooooo cool!

Allow me to offer an appropriately rowdy Midweek Motivator ;)

(that song makes for an awesome alarm)

Have a great week everyone! :D

  1. Congrats on the new Kindle!
Book buying is infinitely more dangerous with it, but having the editing abilities on it are great for critiquing and revising :)
YAY for thunderstorms! that means the heat wave from hell is gone, right?
    Happy Wednesday! xo

    1. Thank you, and yes, VERY dangerous. My poor bank account ^^;

The heatwave has gone. I do and don't miss it... but I could definitely go for another one of those thunderstorms! :D

  2. I'm with you on that wifi kindle "buy now" button. It's insanely addictive. Thus my need for the AA Book Junkies group. :)

Case in point, I just added the Steampunk series you mentioned to my kindle list. (I blame you) :) I LOVE me some Steampunk though, so really it would have happened eventually without the added temptation.

And congrats on taking up swimming. Perfect summer exercise.

I'm sorry about RainyCityStory...may it rest in peace. It might just need a nap though. Sometimes I have these zombie stories that turn out to have more promise than I realized. It's hard to stare at your own work for that many hours and not get discouraged. Maybe let it sit for a couple of months and then take a look at it again.

Every word you write makes you a better writer. Nothing is ever wasted.

Hope you have a fantastic week!

    1. Can I join that group too?

I heartily accept the blame ;)

Thanks! It's been forever since I swam regularly. I forgot how much I like it.

Zombie story! I like that :D

      Have a great one yourself!

  3. *sigh* Like Kris, the Steampunk series is going to be stacked on top of my TBR list. Maybe, I'll grab it as the next in line;)

Swimming sounds fantastic! I'd really like to be out there swimming laps with you. Guess I should grab my suit. . .if it still fits???

Glad to hear you're having fun writing. :)

  4. I wish we had some sort of community pool near my house - I love to swim! But good for you! And have fun with that Kindle. And the new project! SNIs are so much fun!

    1. SNIs are AWESOME! I really hope this one hangs in there and I can be a bit more chatty about it next week.

  5. That's hilarious that you have a Beastie Boys song on here because I've been listening to them a fair amount this week (yesterday in particular). :P

Sorry to hear about RainyCity!Story, Cole. I missed your post on Monday (hanging with hubby), but I went back and read it now. I hope there comes a time when you can pull it out, dust it off, and feel inspired to jump back in. I do understand how sometimes it just isn't the right time for a story. Still a major bummer. Your new WIP sounds exciting! I've actually been craving urban fantasy lately. :-)

    1. I love me some Beastie Boys ^_^

I really hope I'll be able to revisit it someday, but right now the new story is plodding along nicely!

  6. YAY Kindle!!! It's a whole new world. I use mine for editing, too. No more printing out tons of pages and hoping I don't loose any. Congrats on swimming, it's the best exercise.

I think your thunderstorm hit my area last night. All the kiddos ended up in my room before sunrise.

    1. I need to get used to the Kindle's keyboard a bit more, but so far so good!

My asthma nurse was very happy to hear I swim regularly ^_^ It's fun!

It was the best thunderstorm we've had in forever, but yeah, not so fun for the little ones.

  7. I just have a boring old original kindle (cause I've had it forever). The added tablet capabilities of the kindle fire definately have there covet worthy advantages, but I still love my kindle. Being able to buy a book and start reading it THIS SECOND is wonderful for a train commuter like me. I hope you come to love yours too.

    1. I have an old Sony e-reader too. It still works but it doesn't have a lot of memory. And yes, it's like carrying a constant bookshop around with me!

  10. Ooh, Kindle Fire! I had an old Nook that never quite worked right, then upgraded to a Nook tablet a friend was selling for half the price, even though it was barely a year old. I still read a lot of print books but I love my ereader too.

And genius to use it to read manuscripts. DUH. I only tried that once, and I have a friend's MS on my computer right now and forgot I could do that.

    1. Yeah, I want to strike a balance. No way am I living my life without real books. I love them too much!

Editing my own work was my main motivation. Everything else it can do is a bonus ^_^

  11. Using my ipad for editing has changed my life! I love it, and I love how easy it is to skip backwards and forwards to find things...no more rifling through millions of pages or scrolling forever to get halfway through the document. Yay for Kindles and shiny treats!

    1. Yeeees! The search function is TOO EXCITING FOR WORDS XD

Treats are terribly nice, aren't they? ;)

  12. Yay for the new Kindle what a lovely treat! It is so easy to go crazy buying books on them though, I'm terrible!

Sorry to hear about your story stalling. Maybe you'll pick it up again one day. The urban fantasy sounds fun though :)

Hope you get your swims in. I also find its a great time to have story break throughs :)

  13. I want an e-reader but I can't decide. I do like the idea of reading PDF files. And editing in a new format might be a good tool to see the manuscript in a new way. I love a good thunderstorm. Have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Being able to read PDFs is a real bonus! It took me months to decide. I've been thinking since December 2012 and I finally went ahead and bought it last weekend. So far, so good!

      Have a brilliant weekend yourself!

  14. Yay for the new Kindle! I have an e-reader, too, and have been buying a lot of stand-alone books for it. Like you, I have a lot of hardbacks that I've already bought for series, so I'll continue to buy those to keep them matching. Can't stand the thought of having a series that's half e-book and half hardback! lol

  15. That's a nice new Kindle! Isn't it fun reading your own book on an ereader? Somehow it makes it feel a little more real. I'm sorry to hear RainyCity!Story is dead. I found the working title so intriguing. I hope someday whatever made it stall will be resolved. Have fun with swimming and your new urban fantasy project!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, exactly! It doesn't have a cover but I can totally pretend it's a published book :P

I'll share my new working title next week. Hopefully it will live up to RainyCity!Story.

  17. Ooh! Congrats on your new Kindle... Very cool! And best of luck with your new project. Urban fantasy is one of those genres that really intimidates me when it comes to writing. Love to read it, but I feel totally over-my-head when I think about writing it. :-)

  18. I won a tablet through work a few months ago and I immediately bought a bunch of eBooks - I couldn't help it :)

  19. I'm writing Urban Fantasy for the first time ever right now. I think it's refreshing to mix things up once in a while! Or at least that's what I'm trying to convince myself when I feel completely out of my element. thanks for stopping by!

    1. I recently bought all the missing books of a series I had originally borrowed from the library. And I hate when I borrow things from the library and forget what the author and series is so I can't go and buy it later on.

  21. I've heard good things about the Kindle Fire. I broke my Kindle during our move from New York, and it was sad. I need to get another, but alas. Glad to hear your new project is going well!

  22. I can get a little... um... particular (OCD-ish, perhaps) about my books. I like my series books to be the same format, and have a similar cover design. It messes with my head when one book is paperback, and the others hardcover; or one's an ebook and the others paper... or the publisher decides to change the series cover design after the first book comes out... ARGGG!!!

I haven't yet used my iPad for editing. I'm old, and it's harder for old people to break old habits. It took me a big novel to realize the benefits of writing on the PC as opposed to long hand in notepads... so give me a little while on that one. :)

All the best with your new project, Cole! :D

    1. Oh, I know what you mean about changed covers. It reaaaaaaally irritates me too!

Come on, Colin. You're only as old as you tell yourself you are :P

  23. I'm still iffy on e-readers, although I did get the Nook when it first came out. I'm like you, I can't go half in half with series. I'll also still buy my "favorites" in hard or paperbacks because I just need to have them in my hands for real. I'm warming up to it though. :)

    1. I wasn't much of an e-reader user with my old, black and white reader, but I'm pretty keen on using my Kindle :D I definitely won't be going without real books though.

  25. Oooh the Kindle Looks pretty!!! :) My Kindle Keyboard died a very abrupt death *still mourning* Good thing when I buy a new one(maybe K.Fire) my ebooks will be there. I'm using ipad right now, but competing with my kids for the said ipad is turning out to be dangerous. Btw, thanks for the recommendation. I one-clicked the first book in the series "The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack"

Have a great week, Miss Cole. :)

  26. Oh no about RainyCity!Story, but yay that your new idea is chugging along fine. Switching things up is oftentimes helpful (and liberating)!

I loved your little composition book fake out, haha. The kindle fire is so shiny! I have like a 2nd gen keyboard kindle, so that looks worlds different.

Thunderstorms always sound kind of magical and great for writing. We don't really get many though around Los Angeles. Ultimately, this is good because I hate driving in the rain. It is a nightmare here. :P

    1. Definitely liberating!

I love the composition book cover soooo much ^_^ I need to get it a little baggy though for travelling though.

I live in coastal England so we don't tend to get storms very often either, but when we do, I make the most of it. I've only been to LA once, but I can imagine what the rain does to the traffic *gulp!*

  27. Bummer about RainyCity!Story! :( But like you said, it's not necessarily dead forever. It's cool being writers because we get to play necromancer every now and then. Mwahahaha.
