What's Up Wednesday

Welcome again to another What's Up Wednesday! Stop by Jaime and Erin's blogs to join in!

What I'm Reading

Steampunk goodness!
I just finished the fourth in George Mann's Newbury and Hobbes Investigations series. It is a must-read for all steampunk fans.  Look at those beautiful covers! Of all the various steampunk series I've tried over the years, this is the one I still like the best.  It's been a long wait since the third book, but I'm happy to report it was a fantastic story.

What I'm Writing

RainyCity!Story is coming along nicely and I finally hit 10,000 words! WOO!

What Else I'm Up To

I survived my 110 hours in two weeks at work and am now happily enjoying a week off... Although I'm still really annoyed by how disappointing Pacific Rim was.  What really irritated me were the two "kooky" scientists.  They were appalling! I'm sorry, was I supposed to find them funny? No. I hate it when smart people are treated like total freaks. Hate, hate, hate. I didn't care about any of the characters, not even when the film really wanted me to, look! LOOK AT THIS TRAGEDY AND WEEP!!!!! and at no point was I able to suspend my disbelief.  There was a certain "funny" moment involving a Newton's Cradle that was so tacky I actually shouted in disbelief... much to the amusement (or maybe annoyance... okay definitely annoyance) of the people around me.  I found all of the film's humour to be quite badly timed... oh, and just not funny.

AND OHMIGAWD WHY WEREN'T THE STUPID THINGS MORE WATERPROOF WHEN THEY ARE FIGHTING IN THE GODDAMN SEA?!?!?! AND EMPs! I CAN'T SAY MORE BECAUSE OF SPOILERS BUT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

I can overlook plotholes and inconsistencies when I'm otherwise engaged... Pacific Rim failed spectacularly, and I won't go on because of spoilers and wooooooow look at that rant!

...Okay, yes, that is exactly why I don't review books on this blog :P When I don't like something, I reaaaaaaaaaaaaally don't like something ^^; Sorry if you're a fan of the film. I just hate to be that disappointed in something that should've been good. I spent most of the film willing it to just bloody end.

WE HAVE FIVE GUYS IN THE UK!
Ah, beautiful!
(Oh, but I had a great time in London!)

What Inspires me

We're approaching the fourth and final week in my Top Five Soundtrack Tracks.  Here's a recap:

Film
Anime/Animation
TV Themes

This week?

Oh yes, it's time to share some fantastic gaming music with you all. I'll try to be a little more self-controlled, I promise.

*cough*emphasisontry*cough*

Have a great week everyone.

  1. Yay for 10,000 words. Congratulations!

I'm sad Pacific Rim wasn't good. I was hoping it would be fantastic. You're review made me smile though.

Enjoy the rest of your week off, fingers crossed this amazing weather continues!

    1. Thanks!

I went into it expecting to be entertained. I rolled my eyes so much I nearly strained myself. Glad the review made you smile though. At least some good has come of it.

Cheers! I intend to enjoy it as much as possible!

  2. Hey, congrats on hitting 10 000 words! I still can't believe you manage to squeeze in time to write with all the hours you've been working lately. I'm glad you survived your very long two weeks!

Thanks for the heads up on Pacific Rim. You know I love sci-fi, and that one looked interesting, but the things you've mentioned are also some of my pet peeves. I'm pretty darn critical when it comes to movies, so I think I'll have to pass on this one (at least until it's on Netflix) because I'm guessing my reaction will be much the same as yours. :)

You're very welcome! I'm still so irritated by the film. It had so much potential! It should have been so much better.

  3. Oh my god those books are beautiful! I want to read them just because the covers are so stunning, plus I love me some Steampunk! :) Congrats on hitting 10K! And enjoy your week off, you deserve it after all those hours of work.

  4. Ooohh, I haven't read the Newbury and Hobbes series and I love Steampunk, so I will definitely have to check it out!

And as a scientist, particularly a Female scientist, I have to agree with you wholeheartedly at absolutely HATING how scientists are portrayed in film and other media. Being smart is not a disease. Not all scientists are nerdy outcasts and the fact that our society embraces this stereotype annoys me to no end. (How's that for a comment rant?)

Personally, I loved your rant on Pacific Rim. It's basically Godzilla meets Transformers...I wish Hollywood would hire some writers with NEW ideas instead of making Scary Movie XXXVII. *grin*

Congrats on surviving 110 hours! Hope you enjoy your week off of bliss. :)

    1. Awesome! I hope you enjoy them.

      That's a lovely rant! *applause!*

It's basically a mecha anime turned into live action except it was awful and insulting and dull and boring and cliched beyond belief...

...Nope, still haven't calmed down :P

      Thanks! I'm enjoying it!

  5. Woohoo for 10K!!! That's awesome!

Based on the previews, I have no desire to see Pacific Rim so I'm glad I read your review because it only fortifies the non-desire. TBH, we mostly only see kid movies in the theaters. Too expensive for a family of four. But I do hope to see Sea of Monsters in August. We love some Percy Jackson in our house. :)

    Have a good week!

You're welcome for the review. I'm so picky with what I do go and see that when I do see something and it does disappoint, it irritates me a lot.

      Have an awesome week yourself!

      I'm so glad I'm not the only one who disliked it ^^;

  7. I haven't read any steampunk aside from the LEVIATHAN series. I think I'm a bit hesitant because LEVIATHAN was so good, I would probably judge everything else by that standard. However, if you say this is a good series, I'll have to take note. :)

I can't say I was ever planning on seeing Pacific Rim, but I enjoyed your rant, Cole. If you can't rant on your own blog, where else can you rant? ;)

Congrats on hitting 10,000 words! Keep up the good work. :)

    1. Well, it's not YA for a start so I imagine it's a tad different to the Leviathan series. Plus the Victorian London setting should be right up your alley!

That's exactly why I let rip! Normally I keep these things *relatively* contained, but that film irritated me down to my final nerves.

      Thanks!

  9. I have a feeling I won't like Pacific Rim, either - I get so mad at most sci-fi b/c of stuff like that.

  10. Congrats on reaching 10K, Cole! That's awesome. :) As is getting Five Guys in the UK. We have one in my city and it's pretty tasty. They have especially good fries. That's too bad about Pacific Rim. My hubby was really looking forward to that one. :/

Have a great week off, Cole!

  15. Awesome about the 10K words. That is amazing! I haven't seem Pacific Rim, but I know for me expectations play a HUGE role in how satisfied I am with a film. There's nothing worse that hoping for a great escape and being utterly disappointed. And thanks for the heads up on the steampunk series. I will definitely check it out.

    1. I can't hold back very well either, which is why I don't review books. Films are a bit different though, especially when they make me that frustrated.

  18. Well, Pacific Rim may not have been great for you, but at least you guys have Five Guys? (OMG I want Five Guys so much now. Except ours is over in the sketchy part of town and yeah not going there.)

  19. Thanks for visiting my first What's up post. I haven't heard of Newbury and Hobbs but I do love steampunk so I'm intrigued.

Pacific Rim looked like it would be a little to a lot hokey... maybe worth renting someday but sounds like probably not.

  20. I don't think I've ever read steampunk. I've watched steampunk and played steampunk video games, but reading it? Not so much (maybe something I can't quite remember). I should check into it.

Poor you working 110 hours! I'm glad you are through that. Hopefully it won't happen again anytime soon!

Ha, ha RE 2! I don't have much of a memory for soundtracks so I'd probably be terrible for making a list right now. ALTHOUGH, I don't know how you could ever miss the Cowboy Bebob theme: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aw3fN3OPk3A Or search Cowboy Bebop opening (Tank!). The movie had a great opening too... so look that one up as well!

...Alas, I'm about to work 130 hours in 3 weeks soooooooooo... yeah, this week off is the eye of the storm, so to speak.

That is an awesome theme, but I've never seen the anime ^^; I should probably correct that oversight at some point...

  22. WOW. You really didn't like Pacific Rim, huh. That actually surprises me since most people I've heard talk about it so far RAVED about how AMAZING it was. I haven't seen it yet, so I don't have an opinion.

Congrats on reaching 10K and good luck with your writing goals this week!

    1. Yeaaaah, I tend to be rather opinionated which is exactly why I don't review things on a regular basis. I'd either be "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!" or "THIS IS WHY IT SUCKED!" and rarely do I just go "uh, yeah, it was all right..." Still, at least someone enjoyed it ^^;

      Cheers!

  23. Ooh, those steampunk covers are so pretty! Have you read the GLASS BOOKS OF THE DREAM EATERS series? I think it's kind of steampunky ... I thought it was fun. Certainly kept me up reading late into the night!

I don't have much interested in Pacific Rim, but especially not after hearing your review. Hahaha - not that you have a strong opinion about it. :)

Kudos on making 10K!!! Woot! And good luck with your writing goals this week. :)

  24. Oh man, I hear you. I CANNOT do reviews on my blog because I just can't hide it when I dislike a book and I don't want to make any enemies in publishing because it's a hard enough industry as it is! And even on Goodreads I try to be fairly judicious, though honest.

    1. Me neither! I try to be super polite about things but actually I'm an opinionated person and sometimes my dislike of something really gets the better of me... as does my obsessive fangirl love of something :D
