Tracking Handwritten Progress

Writing drafts by hand means you can't really get a good idea of what your wordcount is.  You can work out averages by counting the words on a single line then multiplying it by the total number of lines but it's not exact.  However, you can see how far into your notebook you are based on how many pages you've scrawled on ;)

Not bad! ;) And I'm writing the story in order for once! GO ME! :D

  1. I used to do this kinda math when I handwrote my first drafts! I double-checked my estimates once I typed it up, and it was decently accurate.

    1. *is impressed* My handwriting is too unpredictable. I can cram 20 words onto a page on a good day and five on a messy day :P

  2. Haha yes, go you! That notebook looks pretty intense, by the way. ;) Good luck getting through the rest of it!

  4. Why worry about word counts? Just write it and find out later.

  5. I don't hand-write drafts anymore. The last novel I wrote out by hand was over 250,000 words long, and it was not in order! I wrote it in the order the ideas came to me. I pieced it all back together when I typed it up, but I used the formula you suggest (average number of words per line times by the lines on a page) to get an idea of how long the novel was. To begin with, I was concerned it wouldn't be long enough for a novel. By around 200,000 words, I was wondering if I needed to break it up into a series. If I ever go back to it (which I might--it's not a bad story), there will be some SERIOUS editing to do! :)

  6. I do really admire people who write by hand, it does somehow feel more like 'proper' writing! I'm so out of practice, however, that signing my name almost makes my hand ache! When I was at school I could write reams and reams. I suppose it's all about practice and building up slowly.

    Hmmmmm. *reaches for trusty laptop!*

    1. It's one of those habits I never meant to get into and yet sort of did ^^; It just feels SO GOOD to get away from my computer and a filled notebook is so tangible.
